It might as well have been her twin, just in a foal size. Sweezey: Initially, the foal was a mini-me for Songbird. I think it shows the kind of support that breeders were willing to give this horse. There are a lot of really nice proven horses underneath us in that list, which is something we're very proud of. The only stallion that covered more Grade I winners or Grade I-winning producers last year was Tapit. It was, I think, 30 in total, which is something not a lot of people can boast, especially in their first crop. Marquardt: How strong was the rest of Arrogate's first book which produced the foals we're just now seeing on the ground?Īaron: About one-quarter of his first book were Grade I winners or Grade I-winning producers, which is a phenomenal number. She had a devastating cruising speed and so did we. She's a filly that ran a 107 Beyer, which is huge, and Arrogate ran a 122. could have gone to any horse in the world to breed Songbird to, and she actually mentioned after she bought her that she was thinking about Galileo (Ire), Tapit, Frankel (GB), and she picked Arrogate. To take a young mare like her, and a young stallion like ours, who had similar accomplishments on the track, and breed them together was a special opportunity. Marquardt: How did this mating come about?Īaron: Not many horses ever achieve that kind of greatness. And then, the Unbridled's Song and Medaglia worked well, and from a phenotype standpoint, Arrogate had a lot of leg and this mare has got leg but not as much as he does. In this particular situation, you're looking at two exceptional individuals and I think Mandy thought it was worth it a shot to take with Arrogate, just because of how exceptional the two of them were. A lot of folks would go, “How could you breed a maiden to a maiden?” And that's a fair argument. And we spent a lot of time on pedigree and matings. Sweezey: To watch the horse run and the way he drops his head and moves, he's just such an impressive creature. Marquardt: Wayne, you could have bred this mare to anybody in the world. A composite of the conversations appears below. So how is Songbird ( Medaglia d'Oro)'s first foal, a filly by Arrogate (Unbridled's Song), coming along? Lucas Marquardt visited the pair and Wayne Sweezey at Timber Town Farm recently to check in on the new mom and her baby chatted as well with Juddmonte's Leif Aaron about Arrogate's first foals and spoke to Mike Smith, who rode both champions. Today, the Songbird Remix birds have appeared in films such as ”I am Legend”, in Audubon literature and advertising, Duncraft (bird product & seed) advertising, in the museum presentations (such as the National Wildlife Research Center of Saudi Arabia) and even billboards and bus benches for the Omaha Reads promotions.īesides being a Renderosity Vendor, I work at home as a freelance artist/photographer and also volunteer/lecture at the Theodore Payne Foundation (a Foundation that focuses a native plant awareness) and at Audubon California. It was a mating of two of the best racehorses of modern times, both maidens in the breeding shed if not on the track. Since then I’ve steadily worked on improving my skills with Painter and Modo, and of course, producing more 3D birds and other flora and fauna with a strong environmental message. That set, designed specifically to raise awareness about threatened species and why they're going extinct, became a template for all my work. The following year, I came into my own blending my love and knowledge of birds with a strong environmental theme "Threatened, Endangered, Extinct". I really didn’t find my nitch in the 3D world until I partnered with BL Render to do the Songbird ReMix Series in 2003. With the advent of Poser 4, I began by creating textures and started a career as a digital artist, selling my work through Zygote, Vista, DAZ3D, Hivewire3D and Renderosity. I didn't start seriously playing with Poser until Version 3 came around. In 2010, I was inducted in the TI-99/4a Hall of Fame.Īfter making my switch to the PC, I started with Sketcher (the precursor to Painter) and even owned Fractal Design's "Poser 1". I eventually became a published artist for Asgard Software and a year later when out on my own to form “Notung Software” which became on of the most popular TI Software companies. I started in the digital world with a TI-99/4a computer in the early 1980's and immediately started creating art and animation with a very limited graphic range in hexadecimal code (16 colors, 256 shapes). Since most here will be interest in digital work, I'll talk about that. As an artist, I do four things Oils on Canvas (Social Commentary), Drawings of National Parks, Photography of Birds and California Native Plants and 2D/3D Digital.
